Paperpile subscriptions explained

Free trial

You can try Paperpile for 30 days without a subscription. You don’t need a credit card for the trial. The trial includes all features. After your trial you don’t need to cancel if you don’t want to subscribe and you can always export your data. See Try Paperpile for free.

Get a subscription

Once your trial has expired you need to get a subscription to continue using Paperpile. See Subscribe to Paperpile.

Plans

We offer three plans. All plans are paid yearly. For current pricing and a detailed feature comparison, see Choose the right plan for you and paperpile.com/pricing.

  • Regular is a great fit for individual researchers who want core reference management features at an affordable price.
  • Expert is for researchers who want advanced library features and collaboration for teams and shared work.
  • Enterprise and Institutions is designed for companies, universities, and research institutions that need scalable and secure tools.

Academic and group discounts are available. See paperpile.com/pricing.

Payment methods

You can pay with credit card. If you don’t have a credit card or need to pay by invoice you can contact support@paperpile.com. See Payment methods.

Renewal of subscriptions

All subscriptions will be automatically renewed yearly until you cancel the subscription.

Cancel subscription

You can cancel your subscription at any time. You will be able to use Paperpile until the end of your current subscription period. After that, you cannot use Paperpile anymore. However, you can always export your data.

Change plans

You can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time. Your data is never deleted when you change plans. See Make changes to your subscription.

  • If you upgrade your plan from Regular to Expert, your subscription updates right away and any newly included features become available immediately (see What happens when I downgrade my plan?). You are charged a prorated amount for the difference between the plan prices, based on the time remaining in your current billing cycle.
  • If you wish to upgrade to an Enterprise and Institutions plan, contact our sales team at sales@paperpile.com to request a quote. Please include the approximate organization size, the number of expected Paperpile users (if known), and whether you need SSO or other specific requirements. See Enterprise subscriptions for more details.

Team subscriptions

If you want a subscription for your research group or company, you can get a team subscription: You create a “Team” in Paperpile and invite others to your team. See Teams and organizations explained.

Add or remove users to your subscription

If you have a team subscription, you can add or remove additional users to your subscription at any time. See Manage users and seats in your team.

  • If you add seats for additional users, your account will be charged a prorated amount based on the percentage of the billing cycle left at the time each member was added. Note: If you buy new seats directly in Settings > Billing > Manage seats, you will be charged immediately. If you invite users via Settings > Team you will be charged for all new members only once per month (on the day of the month you initially signed up for your subscription).
  • If you remove seats, your account will be credited a prorated amount based on the percentage of the billing cycle left at the time each seat was removed. This credit will automatically be applied the next time your subscription renews.

Common questions

Is there a free plan for Paperpile?

No, we don't have a free plan. To use Paperpile after the 30 day free trial, you need a subscription. We offer a range of plans to suit different research needs. For more details, see Choose the right plan for you.

We provide our service 24/7 with a dedicated team of 20 people who develop new features, fix bugs, maintain servers, and help our users with problems. There are no storage limitations, and no unnecessary complexity.

We found that this model works well for our users and for us as a small, independent company.

Do you have monthly plans?

No, all our plans are billed annually.

Can I pay once and get lifetime access?

No, but you can purchase a multi-year license. Please contact support@paperpile.com for more information and/or to request an invoice.

Can you extend or pause my trial?

30 days is a fair period to find out if Paperpile is the right product for you. In general, we do not extend or pause trials.

However, if you signed up and then did not have time to test it in your first 30 days or you want to give it another try after a while, we can extend trials for up to 2 weeks. Please reach out to us via the in-app messenger or support@paperpile.com if you have questions about that.

Can multiple users use the same account or subscription?

Each account can only be used by one user. After the free trial, each account needs a subscription, either through a personal subscription or a “seat” in a team or site subscription.

Do I qualify for academic discount?

Yes, if you are a student, faculty, or researcher affiliated with an accredited university, recognized research institution, or eligible non-profit organization. If you are unsure if you qualify, please contact our team at support@paperpile.com.

How can I buy a license for someone else?

If you are a reseller, administrative assistant, IT manager — or similar and want to purchase a single, team, or site subscription for your organization, please contact support at support@paperpile.com.
