Sort references

Use the sort menu in the reference list header, to change the sort order of the reference list. Click the arrow to switch between ascending and descending order.

You can sort references by:

  • Date added: The date when the reference was added to the library.
  • Date published: The date when the reference was published.
  • Author: Alphabetical by the last name of the first author. If no authors are given, the names of editors are used. References without any authors or editors will be sorted last.
  • Journal: Alphabetical by the name of the journal. References of other types without a journal name will be sorted after journal articles. Books are sorted by publisher, conference articles by the conference name, theses by university, reports by institution, patents by the issuing authority, and references of type "Miscellaneous" by the field "How published".
  • Title: Alphabetically by the title of the reference.

Your sort selection will apply throughout the Paperpile web app to all folders, labels, and shared libraries.

When you search your library, results are automatically sorted by relevance, overriding your previous sort selection. However, you can adjust the sort order for the current search results.
