Export your library data

You can export a folder, a label, selected references, or your complete Paperpile library in different formats to use your data in other programs like Excel or with LaTeX.

Choose what you want to export

Export selected references from your reference list

  • Select one or more references from your reference list
  • Click the three-dot menu in the toolbar
  • Click Export
  • Select the format and click Export

Export your library

  • To export your entire personal library, click your profile picture on the top right and go to Settings > Data and files > Export data
  • Or click the three-dot menu in the sidebar and choose Export
  • Select the format and click Export

Export a folder

  • Click the three-dot menu next to the folder in the sidebar and select Export
  • Select the format and click Export

Export a label

  • Click the three-dot menu next to the label in the sidebar and select Export
  • Select the format and click Export

Export as BibTeX

  • Exporting as BibTeX is useful when you write in LaTeX or to transfer data between different reference management programs as it is widely supported.

Export as RIS

  • RIS is the industry standard for reference management.
  • You can use RIS to transfer data to other reference management software.

Export as CSV

  • CSV (comma-separated values) is a common text-based data exchange format.
  • You can open a CSV file with any text editor, including Excel.
  • Learn all about the CSV format here.

Export as JSON

  • JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation and is a commonly used data format to transfer data between a client and server, commonly in web applications.
  • Your JSON export contains data in Paperpile’s internal data format, including all user-editable metadata, attachments, folders, and labels.
  • At the moment, this can’t be re-imported into Paperpile.

Common questions

Are PDFs exported?

Currently, PDFs will not be exported with your data export. To export PDFs, you can Sync with Google Drive, and then download the files there.
