Choose the right plan for you

As a small, independent company, we want Paperpile to stay both affordable and sustainable. That’s why we offer a range of plans and discounts to fit different needs.

Plans

Paperpile offers three plans to fit different research needs. For current pricing and a detailed feature comparison, see paperpile.com/pricing.

• Regular includes the essentials you need for end-to-end reference management: collect, organize, read, write, and cite. This plan is perfect for individual researchers who want core functionality at an affordable price.
• Expert is for researchers who want to do more with their library and collaborate with others. It includes all features you need to manage and grow your research, whether you work individually or as part of a team. Expert adds full-text PDF search, notes and PDF annotations, shared folders and libraries, supplementary file support, and advanced integrations such as Google Drive sync for PDFs.
• Enterprise and Institutions is designed for companies, universities, and research institutions that need secure and scalable research tools across their organization. This plan includes all features plus single sign-on with SAML, advanced security and privacy settings, custom agreements, vendor security reviews, and HIPAA compliance.

Regular:

• Collect and organize your references
• Store and read your PDFs
• Cite in all major styles and BibTeX
• Basic integrations: Word, Google Docs, academic databases and publishers

Expert (includes everything in Regular, and):

• Search full text across all PDFs
• Add notes and PDF annotations
• Collaborate with shared folders and libraries
• Save any file type (supplementary material)
• Advanced integrations and custom citation styles

Enterprise and Institutions (includes everything in Expert, and):

• Single sign-on with SAML
• Advanced security and privacy settings
• Custom MSA and SLA
• Vendor security reviews
• HIPAA compliance

Discounts

We also offer the following discounts:

• Academic discount: 50% off for students, faculty, and researchers affiliated with accredited universities or recognized research institutions, as well as eligible non-profits worldwide.
• Group discount: Up to 20% off for Expert plans. The discount increases with the number of seats. See our pricing page for details and Get a Paperpile subscription for your team or organization.
• Special discounts: Occasionally, we run promotions and share coupon codes. See Coupons.

Legacy plans

With the introduction of new pricing plans in March 2026, Paperpile’s previous plans (”Paperpile Academic” and “Paperpile Business”) were discontinued.

For new customers:

• Only the new plans (Regular, Expert, Enterprise and Institutions) are available.

For existing customers:

• Your subscription on the discontinued plan remains fully functional until the end of your current billing period with no changes to features.
• After your billing period ends, you'll need to switch to a new plan.
• We'll email you 30 days in advance with details.

To thank existing customers and make the transition as smooth as possible, we offer a special plan called “Paperpile Classic”:

• Paperpile Classic includes the same unlimited feature set as the legacy plans at a significant discount compared to the new plans.
• Anyone with an active Paperpile subscription before March 2026 is eligible to switch to Paperpile Classic.
• To switch to Paperpile Classic, click on your profile picture in the bottom left and go to Settings > Billing.
• When you switch, you receive full credit for the remaining time on your current plan, and you can lock in the discounted price for another year.
