How to format your references using the Multiphase Science and Technology citation style

This is a short guide how to format citations and the bibliography in a manuscript for Multiphase Science and Technology (MST). For a complete guide how to prepare your manuscript refer to the journal's instructions to authors.

Using reference management software

Typically you don't format your citations and bibliography by hand. The easiest way is to use a reference manager:

PaperpileThe citation style is built in and you can choose it in Settings > Citation Style or Paperpile > Citation Style in Google Docs.
EndNoteFind the style here: output styles overview
Mendeley, Zotero, Papers, and othersThe style is either built in or you can download a CSL file that is supported by most references management programs.
BibTeXBibTeX syles are usually part of a LaTeX template. Check the instructions to authors if the publisher offers a LaTeX template for this journal.

Journal articles

Those examples are references to articles in scholarly journals and how they are supposed to appear in your bibliography.

Not all journals organize their published articles in volumes and issues, so these fields are optional. Some electronic journals do not provide a page range, but instead list an article identifier. In a case like this it's safe to use the article identifier instead of the page range.

A journal article with 1 author
Jones, W. D., Synthetic Chemistry. The Key to Successful Organic Synthesis Is, Science (New York, N.Y.), vol. 295, no. 5553, pp. 289–90, January 11, 2002.
A journal article with 2 authors
Züllig, S. and Hengartner, M. O., Cell Biology. Tickling Macrophages, a Serious Business, Science (New York, N.Y.), vol. 304, no. 5674, pp. 1123–24, May 21, 2004.
A journal article with 3 authors
Drell, S. D., Shultz, G. P. and Andreasen, S. P., Nuclear Safety. A Safer Nuclear Enterprise, Science (New York, N.Y.), vol. 336, no. 6086, p. 1236, June 8, 2012.
A journal article with 11 or more authors
Federzoni, E. A., Humbert, M., Torbett, B. E., Behre, G., Fey, M. F. and Tschan, M. P., CEBPA-Dependent HK3 and KLF5 Expression in Primary AML and during AML Differentiation, Scientific Reports, vol. 4, p. 4261, March 3, 2014.

An edited book
Fellows, M., Tan, X., and Zhu, B. Eds., Frontiers in Algorithmics and Algorithmic Aspects in Information and Management: Third Joint International Conference, FAW-AAIM 2013, Dalian, China, June 26-28, 2013. Proceedings, Berlin, Heidelberg: Springer, XII, 364 p. 97 illus, 2013.

Younas I. Awan and M. Mecella, Eds., Cham: Springer International Publishing, pp. 37–48, 2015.

Web sites

Sometimes references to web sites should appear directly in the text rather than in the bibliography. Refer to the Instructions to authors for Multiphase Science and Technology.

Blog post
Hale, T., Amish House Dust Found To Protect Kids Against Asthma, IFLScience, August 4, 2016.

Reports

This example shows the general structure used for government reports, technical reports, and scientific reports. If you can't locate the report number then it might be better to cite the report as a book. For reports it is usually not individual people that are credited as authors, but a governmental department or agency like "U. S. Food and Drug Administration" or "National Cancer Institute".

Government report
Government Accountability Office, Communications: Mobile Subscriber Equipment Testing Issues and Army Improvement Plan, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC, NSIAD-89-165BR, Jul. 6, 1989.

Theses and dissertations

Theses including Ph.D. dissertations, Master's theses or Bachelor theses follow the basic format outlined below.

Doctoral dissertation
Hilton, L. C., Case Study on Organic Farming as a Sustainable Solution for African-American Farmers, Doctoral dissertation, University of Phoenix, 2015.

News paper articles

Unlike scholarly journals, news papers do not usually have a volume and issue number. Instead, the full date and page number is required for a correct reference.

New York Times article
Greenhouse, L., Justices Rule on Retroactivity of Decisions, New York Times, February 21, 2008.

In-text citations

References should be cited in the text by name and year in parentheses:

This sentence cites one reference (Jones, 2002).
This sentence cites two references (Jones, 2002; Züllig et al., 2004).

Here are examples of in-text citations with multiple authors:

  • Two authors: (Züllig et al., 2004)
  • Three or more authors: (Federzoni et al., 2014)
