How to format your references using the Atomization and Sprays citation style

This is a short guide how to format citations and the bibliography in a manuscript for Atomization and Sprays (AAS). For a complete guide how to prepare your manuscript refer to the journal's instructions to authors.

Using reference management software

Typically you don't format your citations and bibliography by hand. The easiest way is to use a reference manager:

PaperpileThe citation style is built in and you can choose it in Settings > Citation Style or Paperpile > Citation Style in Google Docs.
EndNoteFind the style here: output styles overview
Mendeley, Zotero, Papers, and othersThe style is either built in or you can download a CSL file that is supported by most references management programs.
BibTeXBibTeX syles are usually part of a LaTeX template. Check the instructions to authors if the publisher offers a LaTeX template for this journal.

Journal articles

Those examples are references to articles in scholarly journals and how they are supposed to appear in your bibliography.

Not all journals organize their published articles in volumes and issues, so these fields are optional. Some electronic journals do not provide a page range, but instead list an article identifier. In a case like this it's safe to use the article identifier instead of the page range.

A journal article with 1 author
Smaglik, P., Chemistry’s Clouded View, Nature, vol. 421, no. 6920, p. 295, January 16, 2003.
A journal article with 2 authors
Purves, D. and Pacala, S., Predictive Models of Forest Dynamics, Science (New York, N.Y.), vol. 320, no. 5882, pp. 1452–53, June 13, 2008.
A journal article with 3 authors
Zeyl, C., Vanderford, T. and Carter, M., An Evolutionary Advantage of Haploidy in Large Yeast Populations, Science (New York, N.Y.), vol. 299, no. 5606, pp. 555–58, January 24, 2003.
A journal article with 11 or more authors
Qin, L. C., Zhao, X., Hirahara, K., Miyamoto, Y., Ando, Y. and Iijima, S., The Smallest Carbon Nanotube, Nature, vol. 408, no. 6808, p. 50, November 2, 2000.

Books and book chapters

Here are examples of references for authored and edited books as well as book chapters.

An authored book
Reeve, W. D., DC Power System Design for Telecommunications, Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2006.
An edited book
Kunkel, J. M., Balaji, P., and Dongarra, J. Eds., High Performance Computing: 31st International Conference, ISC High Performance 2016, Frankfurt, Germany, June 19-23, 2016, Proceedings, Cham: Springer International Publishing, XV, 506 p. 227 illus, 2016.
A chapter in an edited book
Milkowski, A. L., Sources of Exposure to Nitrogen Oxides, in Nitrite and Nitrate in Human Health and Disease, N. S. Bryan and J. Loscalzo, Eds., Totowa, NJ: Humana Press, pp. 49–65, 2011.

Web sites

Sometimes references to web sites should appear directly in the text rather than in the bibliography. Refer to the Instructions to authors for Atomization and Sprays.

Blog post
Carpineti, A., Rocky Planets Can Form In Binary Systems, IFLScience, February 27, 2017.

Reports

This example shows the general structure used for government reports, technical reports, and scientific reports. If you can't locate the report number then it might be better to cite the report as a book. For reports it is usually not individual people that are credited as authors, but a governmental department or agency like "U. S. Food and Drug Administration" or "National Cancer Institute".

Government report
Government Accountability Office, Internet Infrastructure: Challenges in Developing a Public/Private Recovery Plan, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC, GAO-06-1100T, Sep. 13, 2006.

Theses and dissertations

Theses including Ph.D. dissertations, Master's theses or Bachelor theses follow the basic format outlined below.

Doctoral dissertation
Sitterding, M. C., Situation Awareness and the Selection of Interruption Handling Strategies during the Medication Administration Process: A Qualitative Study, Doctoral dissertation, Indiana University, 2014.

News paper articles

Unlike scholarly journals, news papers do not usually have a volume and issue number. Instead, the full date and page number is required for a correct reference.

New York Times article
McKINLEY, J. C., Jr, A Murder Trial in Which the Gunman Is Unknown, New York Times, May 11, 2017.

In-text citations

References should be cited in the text by name and year in parentheses:

This sentence cites one reference (Smaglik, 2003).
This sentence cites two references (Smaglik, 2003; Purves et al., 2008).

Here are examples of in-text citations with multiple authors:

  • Two authors: (Purves et al., 2008)
  • Three or more authors: (Qin et al., 2000)
