What is OpenAthens?

With OpenAthens, members of the Vermont State Colleges community can access licensed digital resources both on and off campus. It works behind the scenes to verify your Vermont State login, giving you seamless access to the same academic materials you’d normally use while connected to the campus network.

Why use OpenAthens?

Some of Vermont State Colleges’s most valuable digital resources are only available to users on the campus network. OpenAthens makes those resources available off-campus too—just sign in with your Vermont State credentials, and you’ll be recognized as an authorized user no matter where you are.

What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?

When comparing EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN, it’s helpful to think about what each tool is designed to do. VPNs are great for full network access, allowing staff and faculty to use internal tools as if they were on campus. EZproxy and OpenAthens, however, are designed specifically for accessing library and academic resources. OpenAthens improves on EZproxy by using modern identity-based access instead of relying on IP ranges, making it easier to manage access permissions across different publishers and platforms.
