What is OpenAthens?

OpenAthens is a single sign-on service that lets Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University students, faculty, and staff securely access the university’s online resources from anywhere. Once you're logged in with your Sher-e-Bangla credentials, you can explore journals, databases, and other academic content—just as if you were on campus.

Why use OpenAthens?

Many of the resources provided by Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, such as databases and e-journals, are restricted to users on the campus network. OpenAthens allows you to access these resources remotely by securely confirming your Sher-e-Bangla login, so you don’t have to be on site to get what you need.

What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?

The key difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and a VPN lies in how they handle authentication and user access. EZproxy works by rewriting links and proxying your session through a campus IP address. OpenAthens uses federated identity management to authenticate users based on their university credentials, offering a more scalable and secure solution. A VPN creates a private connection to the university’s network, which is useful for accessing internal systems, but overkill for simply reading journals or using library databases.
