What is OpenAthens?
With OpenAthens, members of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology community can access licensed digital resources both on and off campus. It works behind the scenes to verify your Rose-Hulman login, giving you seamless access to the same academic materials you’d normally use while connected to the campus network.
Why use OpenAthens?
Some of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s most valuable digital resources are only available to users on the campus network. OpenAthens makes those resources available off-campus too—just sign in with your Rose-Hulman credentials, and you’ll be recognized as an authorized user no matter where you are.
What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?
The key difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and a VPN lies in how they handle authentication and user access. EZproxy works by rewriting links and proxying your session through a campus IP address. OpenAthens uses federated identity management to authenticate users based on their university credentials, offering a more scalable and secure solution. A VPN creates a private connection to the university’s network, which is useful for accessing internal systems, but overkill for simply reading journals or using library databases.
