What is OpenAthens?
OpenAthens provides a simple and secure way for students, faculty, and staff at Read@Academy to connect to academic resources from anywhere in the world. After signing in with your Read@Academy account, you’ll have full access to the university’s licensed content—without needing to use a VPN or change device settings.
Why use OpenAthens?
Some of Read@Academy’s most valuable digital resources are only available to users on the campus network. OpenAthens makes those resources available off-campus too—just sign in with your Read@Academy credentials, and you’ll be recognized as an authorized user no matter where you are.
What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?
The key difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and a VPN lies in how they handle authentication and user access. EZproxy works by rewriting links and proxying your session through a campus IP address. OpenAthens uses federated identity management to authenticate users based on their university credentials, offering a more scalable and secure solution. A VPN creates a private connection to the university’s network, which is useful for accessing internal systems, but overkill for simply reading journals or using library databases.
