What is OpenAthens?
OpenAthens is a single sign-on service that lets Oak Hill College students, faculty, and staff securely access the university’s online resources from anywhere. Once you're logged in with your Oak Hill credentials, you can explore journals, databases, and other academic content—just as if you were on campus.
Why use OpenAthens?
Licensing deals with content providers typically limit access to users physically on campus. OpenAthens ensures that students, faculty, and staff at Oak Hill College can access those same resources from anywhere, simply by logging in with their Oak Hill username and password.
What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?
When comparing EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN, it’s helpful to think about what each tool is designed to do. VPNs are great for full network access, allowing staff and faculty to use internal tools as if they were on campus. EZproxy and OpenAthens, however, are designed specifically for accessing library and academic resources. OpenAthens improves on EZproxy by using modern identity-based access instead of relying on IP ranges, making it easier to manage access permissions across different publishers and platforms.
