What is OpenAthens?

OpenAthens is a single sign-on service that lets Nihon Institute of Medical Science students, faculty, and staff securely access the university’s online resources from anywhere. Once you're logged in with your Nihon Medical credentials, you can explore journals, databases, and other academic content—just as if you were on campus.

Why use OpenAthens?

Licensing deals with content providers typically limit access to users physically on campus. OpenAthens ensures that students, faculty, and staff at Nihon Institute of Medical Science can access those same resources from anywhere, simply by logging in with their Nihon Medical username and password.

What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?

The key difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and a VPN lies in how they handle authentication and user access. EZproxy works by rewriting links and proxying your session through a campus IP address. OpenAthens uses federated identity management to authenticate users based on their university credentials, offering a more scalable and secure solution. A VPN creates a private connection to the university’s network, which is useful for accessing internal systems, but overkill for simply reading journals or using library databases.
