What is OpenAthens?
Think of OpenAthens as your digital key to NewSchool of Architecture & Design’s academic resources. It gives students, staff, and faculty secure, off-campus access to licensed databases, journals, and more—no special software or campus connection required. Just log in with your NewSchool credentials, and you're ready to go.
Why use OpenAthens?
Due to licensing agreements with publishers, most of NewSchool of Architecture & Design’s online academic content is limited to authorized users. OpenAthens bridges the gap by verifying your identity and granting access from anywhere, without requiring you to connect through the university’s internal network.
What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?
The key difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and a VPN lies in how they handle authentication and user access. EZproxy works by rewriting links and proxying your session through a campus IP address. OpenAthens uses federated identity management to authenticate users based on their university credentials, offering a more scalable and secure solution. A VPN creates a private connection to the university’s network, which is useful for accessing internal systems, but overkill for simply reading journals or using library databases.
