What is OpenAthens?
With OpenAthens, members of the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary community can access licensed digital resources both on and off campus. It works behind the scenes to verify your Kenrick-Glennon login, giving you seamless access to the same academic materials you’d normally use while connected to the campus network.
Why use OpenAthens?
Many of the resources provided by Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, such as databases and e-journals, are restricted to users on the campus network. OpenAthens allows you to access these resources remotely by securely confirming your Kenrick-Glennon login, so you don’t have to be on site to get what you need.
What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?
When comparing EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN, it’s helpful to think about what each tool is designed to do. VPNs are great for full network access, allowing staff and faculty to use internal tools as if they were on campus. EZproxy and OpenAthens, however, are designed specifically for accessing library and academic resources. OpenAthens improves on EZproxy by using modern identity-based access instead of relying on IP ranges, making it easier to manage access permissions across different publishers and platforms.
