What is OpenAthens?

OpenAthens provides a simple and secure way for students, faculty, and staff at Glion Institute of Higher Education to connect to academic resources from anywhere in the world. After signing in with your Glion account, you’ll have full access to the university’s licensed content—without needing to use a VPN or change device settings.

Why use OpenAthens?

Many of the resources provided by Glion Institute of Higher Education, such as databases and e-journals, are restricted to users on the campus network. OpenAthens allows you to access these resources remotely by securely confirming your Glion login, so you don’t have to be on site to get what you need.

What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?

The key difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and a VPN lies in how they handle authentication and user access. EZproxy works by rewriting links and proxying your session through a campus IP address. OpenAthens uses federated identity management to authenticate users based on their university credentials, offering a more scalable and secure solution. A VPN creates a private connection to the university’s network, which is useful for accessing internal systems, but overkill for simply reading journals or using library databases.
