What is OpenAthens?
Think of OpenAthens as your digital key to Berry College’s academic resources. It gives students, staff, and faculty secure, off-campus access to licensed databases, journals, and more—no special software or campus connection required. Just log in with your Berry credentials, and you're ready to go.
Why use OpenAthens?
Some of Berry College’s most valuable digital resources are only available to users on the campus network. OpenAthens makes those resources available off-campus too—just sign in with your Berry credentials, and you’ll be recognized as an authorized user no matter where you are.
What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?
The key difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and a VPN lies in how they handle authentication and user access. EZproxy works by rewriting links and proxying your session through a campus IP address. OpenAthens uses federated identity management to authenticate users based on their university credentials, offering a more scalable and secure solution. A VPN creates a private connection to the university’s network, which is useful for accessing internal systems, but overkill for simply reading journals or using library databases.
